  • According to some historians, Rotonda rises on the Roman site of the ancient Nerulum and coincides with the junction of the two main roads Popilia and Annia. In the Middle Ages Rotonda fell into the hands of Roberto il Guiscardo. From the eighth century onwards it underwent the domination of different lineages and families. From the nucleus belonging to the castelato of Laino, in 849, it belongs to the possessions of Guglielmo di Campania, when the Norman dynasty ended the Longobard domination in the XI century. Later, the Angevin Queen Giovanna II, sells Rotonda to the Scannasorece family of Naples; in 1419 the center is subdued to the powerful Sanseverino family. Then it was dominated by the Aragonese and the Bourbons until the unification of Italy.

  • It is fascinating to know that the rocks of the Pollino are 150 million years old. They were formed in environments similar to the coral atolls of the Bahamas and were attached to Africa. Rotonda rests on the deposits of an ancient lake where the vertebrates who lived in the Pleistocene era went to die, of which today it is possible to admire the fossil remains that have been found. The Paleontological Museum of Rotonda, in fact, one of the main sites of the Pollino Ecomuseum, houses, all the bones of an Elephas antiquus italicus, a species dating back to about 400-700 thousand years ago. The name Rotonda appears in a parchment dated 1083, as the Racioppi attests. In the description of "All Italy and islands pertinent to it", we read the reason for this specific lexeme. The word refers to the arrangement of buildings, around a castle, perched on a hill, located in such a way as to seem a single round block.

  • If it is true that the date of foundation of the current center of Rotonda can not be affirmed with certainty, it is also true that it existed at the time of the Lombards, to whom the country owes its origin to the need for fortification manifested by the people in order to oppose the Goth invaders. In the Middle Ages Rotonda fell under the rule of Roberto il Guiscardo and from the 8th century underwent the domination of several families. The decisive role in the history of the town was undoubtedly that of the Sanseverino di Bisignano (XV century), which was responsible for the construction of the castle of which only the ruins are visible today.
