  • In distant times, before there were built the castle (969 AD) and housing ( 1036 - 1037 AD) was inhabited by the Ausoni, a people thought to come from Asia. In the areas of Santa Croce, Pierno and Civita, there are caves where graffiti is found, which demonstrate the presence of this people in the past. To the Ausoni were added, around 200 BC, the Indo-Europeans, coming from Iran, who merged with the Ausoni. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Lucania, like the rest of Italy, was occupied by the Normans, the Saxons and the Lombards. In 969 AD the castle was built as a defense against the assaults of the Byzantines after the battle of Bovino (FG), by Ottone first of Saxony, emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The first houses of San Fele were built almost close to the outer wall of the castle. The country expanded even more when the inhabitants of Vitalba (city at the foot of Mount Vulture), were forced to reach the heights after malaria.

  • The life around the town of San Fele begins with the construction of its castle fortress (10th century), by the will of Otto I of Saxony to defend the sieges by the Byzantines. The city lives the clash between the Normans and the papacy, during which it hosts Roger II and Pope Honorius II. At the height of the Angevin domination, the town was entrusted to the feudal lords Giovanni Gaulard, Drogone di Beaumont, Guglielmo di Melun. Following the Unification of Italy, San Fele is involved in the phenomenon of banditry led by General Lucano Carmine Donatelli, known as Crocco, who leads the famous brigands Giovanni Fortunato, called "Coppa", Vito Di Gianni, called "Totaro" and Francesco Fasanella, called "Tinna".

  • Geographically the village lies about thirty-five miles east of Salerno. The principal industry is agriculture, in particular, herding. Local wine and cheeses are made there and are exported under the regional label of Volture. Mt. Volture is a very large extinct volcano which can be seen from San Fele and which dominates the skyline of the region. The region is geologically active and frequently subject to earthquakes. The village has a tragic history associated with several severe earthquakes including the one that struck in 1980. Thermal springs and water of high mineral content are common in the region.

  • History, traditions, uncontaminated nature and precious sacred places embellish the village of San Fele, a small town in the Vulture area, in the province of Potenza. It rises north of Basilicata along the slopes of Monte Castello and Monte Torretta and its name is linked to San Giustino de Jacobis, a missionary in Ethiopia, whose native house can be visited in the ancient village, and to the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Pierno, one of the most ancient and admirable places of worship in Basilicata, destination for many devotees coming from outside the region.
