  • The village of Savoia Di Lucania presents itself as a typical medieval village, perched at the top of a mountainous top. The town stands on a spur to the right of the Meandro river surrounded by roughness of the Apennines parallel to the Alburni mountains, immersed in a wildly natural landscape, evocative of beauty and variety. Its territory covers about 32 square kilometers and is largely covered with beech forests. It is located at an altitude ranging from 350 to 1000 meters above sea level; the highest altitudes are found in the areas of Tampone and Macchia Carrara. The inhabited center has kept its original morphology unchanged and the dominant architectures - the castle and the mother church - are clearly visible, indicating the settlement hierarchy. But the ancient core of Savoy is not just church and castle. Around them were built farm houses that are leaning against each other due to the particular roughness of the ground.

  • An unmissable stage between the architectures of Savoia di Lucania is the one in the mother church dedicated to San Nicola di Bari, in the historic center, a few steps from the castle. An elegant portal in local stone embellishes the façade, while the side portal with light frames is no easier. the four-storey square-shaped bell tower is also impressive. The interior, with a square plan, has three naves and houses large canvases that narrate scenes of Biblical episodes from the New and Old Testaments. Valuable is the high altar of Baroque invoice and dedicated to the Immaculate, which houses the wooden statue in the central niche.

  • The presence of the village, with the name of Salvia, is already attested in the Norman-Swabian period as a farmhouse. It undergoes various foreign dominations and is a fiefdom of the Sanseverinos of Marsico, of the de Hansche and, in the Aragonese period, of the Gesualdo and the Caracciolo. The name of the municipality changes in 1879, from Salvia in the current one to demonstrate the fidelity of the village to the Savoy family, after the attack in 1878 by the anarchist Giovanni Passanante to the detriment of King Umberto I, son of Vittorio Emanuele II.

  • For thousands of years, collecting seashells or other fossils in the mountains, the ancient inhabitants of Savoy must have wondered how they could have arrived there. Today we know for sure that in this area during the great ice age there was the sea and when this was withdrawn emerged those lands that we see today.La Lucania was already inhabited at the time by the Mammoths and also had its prehistoric ages of the stone, of the bronze and of the iron whose testimonies are conserved in the Archaeological Museum of Potenza. Also in the territories bordering Savoy have been found chipped stone objects that are traced to the Palaeolithic and Neolithic; in particular the discoveries of the locality Vetraursa di S. Angelo and Serra alta di Piperno.
