  • The center was originally called "Pietra Castalda", ie fortified cliff, as it is mentioned in a document dated 1068. It was an ancient Norman stronghold rebuilt in the mid-twelfth century. Over the centuries the different dominations of feudal lords followed one another up to the Counts Gaetani d'Aragona who built the imposing Castle, of which only a few ruins remain today. Worthy of interest is the parish church of the Immaculate with a particular portal and inside which you can admire a fourteenth-century statue depicting the Madonna with Child, some canvases from the 1400s, a confessional with Renaissance carvings and beautiful 17th century frescoes. Not far from the inhabited area you get to the peaks of the surrounding mountains, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the area.

  • "Ponte alla Luna"(Bridge of the moon) The system of Tibetan bridges in Sasso di Castalda is located on the sides of the “Fosso Arenazzo” which begins right at the foot of the picturesque old town. Through the narrow streets that branch off between the characteristic stone houses of the old town, you come to the beginning of the first bridge, which 95 metres long and suspended about 70 metres high, and across which you can reach the opposite side on a slope characterised by distinctive geologic formations. Following the path along the bank of the “Fosso”, you go past the votive chapel and in 15 minutes you will get to the start of the incredible “Bridge to the moon.” With a single span of a good 300 metres, and suspended in mid-air at 120m above the stream below, you literally travel through the air to the ruins of the castle which dominates the village from above. Upon arrival you will see a glass sky-walk suspended on the deck, and an equipped viewpoint where you can catch your breath for a few minutes while admiring the views of the surrounding mountains set on the ancient ruins. After a short downhill stretch on stone steps, you will return to the historic centre, passing by the small church of San Nicola, which has recently been restored. It takes approximately 2-3 hours to cover the whole length of the path of Tibetan bridges.

  • A system of Tibetan bridges—simple suspension bridges—drapes between two peaks in the Apennines of Basilicata. The main bridge, named Ponte alla Luna, or Bridge to the Moon, is nearly 1,000 feet long and dangles almost 400 feet above the creek below. It takes at least a half hour to cross the the bridge, and it certainly isn’t for the faint of heart. Glancing down at the gaps between the steel steps reveals nothing but empty space that stretches down to the trees far below. The journey is worth any brief bouts of altitude-induced fear, though. At the end, brave visitors are rewarded with a glass platform boasting panoramic views of the scenery and spectacular vistas of the historic village Sasso di Castalda. The name of the bridge (which translates to Bridge to the Moon) honors Rocco Petrone, a mechanical engineer and son of emigrants from Sasso di Castalda. Petrone was the director of launch operations at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center during the late 1960s and was also a director of the Apollo program, helping launch the first astronauts to land on the Moon.
