  • A bright sunny shot of the Purgatory Church and the statue of Cardinal DeLuca one of Venosa’s hometown heroes. The Church was built by the will of the bishop Francesco Maria Neri (1678 - 1684). It highlights the characteristic of the bell tower that makes body with the beautiful and sober façade, all friezes, scrolls, niches and pinnacles, supposedly a Roman architect, made to come to Venosa around 1680 by all ' epoch hear of Pope Innocent XI. Inside there are beautiful spiral columns and a painted San Filippo attributed to Carlo Maratta (1625 - 1713). Cardinal Giovanni Battista De Luca, was born at Venosa, Basilicata, in 1614 of humble parentage. He took up the study of law at Naples in 1635. After graduation, he practiced law as an advocate in Naples for five years. An attack of pulmonary tuberculosis caused him to return to his native place, where he took up the bishop's vicariate. In 1645 De Luca went to Rome, where he soon won a high reputation for his legal ability and became one of Italy's pre-eminent advocates. As a close collaborator of the reform-minded pope Innocent XI, who acceded to the Holy See in 1676, he exerted influence over the organization of the Roman Curia, but stirred up much enmity and jealousy among the conservative leaders of the Church, notably Innocent's secretary Agostino Favoriti. This caused his influence to wane over time. At an advanced age he became a priest and was made first referendary Utriusque Signaturae, then auditor of the Sacred Palace by Innocent, who finally in 1681 raised De Luca to the cardinalate. He died in Rome, on 5 February 1683.

  • One of the many attractions here is the castle “Pirro del Balzo”, named after the Duke that constructed it upon the ruins of an ancient cathedral. The castle was built in several stages, in or around 1400 AD the first towers and the building were placed and construction was continued in the 18th century. Today part of the castle houses the National Archaeological Museum, where archaeological finds from pre-Roman times to the Norman period are stored. Nearby lies the fountain of “Angioina” from 1298 and the “Chiesa del Purgatorio”; a church built in a Baroque style during the sixteenth century, both are worth a visit.
