  • The Netherlands Enkhuizen, like Amsterdam, was one of the harbor-towns of the VOC, from where overseas trade with the East Indies was conducted. It received city rights in 1355. In the mid-17th century, Enkhuizen was at the peak of its power and was one of the most important harbor cities in the Netherlands. Due to a variety of reasons, notably the silting up of the harbors, Enkhuizen lost its position to Amsterdam. The Drommedaris (left side) was erected as a defense work at the entrance to the old harbor, and was originally situated on the Westfriesian dyke, but the stretch of dyke near the Drommedaris was later excavated for the construction of the new harbor. The Drommedaris also served as a prison. The Zuiderkerk, also called Sint-Pancraskerk (background), is a late Gothic hall church. Building started in 1422 or 1423 and was mostly finished by 1458; the upper part of the 75-meter tall tower was finished in 1524.
