  • Last year I started a Kestrel project as they had had 4 successful nests in the nesting box we put up. Although it started off really well, in the end it failed, due to aldultery, domestic violence, and lack of commitment of the Kestrel couple. Read all about it here. So I tried to pick up the project this year, but allas, again the couple decided to stay 'dinkies' for another year. So here is one more of last year's session. Was really happy with daddy Kestrel flying straight towards me and with prey as an added bonus! Keep your fingers crossed for next year! • What seems like an eternity ago, we once spent a much too short night at the magnificent Llao Llao Hotel in Bariloche, Argentina. Although the hotel in itself was absolutely gorgeous, the interior was like a giant log cabin, it was the view that stuck to my memory the most. Endless fields of purple lupins framed the all-surrounding snow-capped peaks of the Andes mountains. Breathtakingly beautiful. At home I tried to grow the same lupins to create my own little lupin field next to our driveway. But our soil was too heavy and all but a few plants perished. A decade later we deepened the pond, also next to the driveway, and discarded the sandy soil that came out of it on the banks of the pond. And little seeds of the few left plants found their way to that soil.. Fast forward to the here and now. Meanwhile hundreds of lupins blossom colorful on that sandy soil and every time I drive up my driveway I tremendously enjoy our own "Little Llao Llao". You can imagine that when I came home a few days ago and I found a Roe Deer doe in the middle of it, it felt like a cherry on the cake. • When I was a child, winters seemed to last forever, everyone went ice skating and snow was a sure thing. I don't know if that is just my imagination or if winters really were more 'wintery' in those days. Now ice and snow are more of a rarity But we really had snow here in Holland this winter. For 3 whole days, the world turned into winter wonderland. I always love this vista in our little patch of forest. I pass it when I'm on the driveway to my house and every time when I leave home I have a look if there are Roe Deer standing there. You can imagine how happy I was that particularly on one of those 3 snowy days, there actually was one standing picture perfect on that path! • We've had Kestrels nesting in front of our house ever since we've put up the nest box and this year I've decided to try to photographically follow the whole process from beginning to end... So for the past weeks already, as often as I can, I sneak out of the house at daybreak and spend several hours in my hide. Little did I know that it's like watching a real life soap-opera!! The female ("She") and the male (I call him Harvey because of his rather 'wham-bam, thank you Mam'-way of lovemaking) have been mating for months before she finally decided that it was time to go and lay eggs. It's the modern way I guess. But last week she finally did it. But then, last sunday, Harvey went for cigarettes..... By tuesday he hadn't returned yet. Which was bad news since with her sitting on the eggs, she depended on him bringing her fresh juicy mice for dinner. So she had to leave the eggs to go find her own meal. Wednesday she was on and off her eggs, all the time searching the sky for Harvey. Without any luck. And then came Leroy.... Leroy is a young handsome Kestrel who stopped by, liked what he saw and decided to take his chances. But She would have nothing of it and fought him right out of the nesting box. The fighting went on for a whole day, (eggs cold in the box) before she gave in to his charms. And so the little hussy was mating with Leroy. Peace had returned to the nesting box and you'd think our cougar and Leroy would be happy ever after... Until Harvey returned! Finding his wife in bed with a young rival. Lots of screeching and ke-ke-ke-ke-ing.... (Kestrel language for cursing) going on. Immediately She pointed the feather at Leroy and together with Harvey she chased him out. But Leroy didn't go quietly!! Heavy fighting sessions between the three of them followed but in the end, Harvey and his adulterous wife sat victoriously 'kissy-kissy' in the nesting box. After some making-up-cuddles she went straight back to breeding the eggs. .... (I'm not putting any money on it if they will hatch though after having been neglected for so long). See! It's like watching a soap-opera!! Picture is She playing very hard to get to Leroy. Canon EOS-1D X Mark II EF600mm f/4L IS II USM ISO 1000, f4.0, 1/2500s, exp comp -0,33

  • My last upload was all about trying something new, inspired by others I admire. This is no exception. Just last year I messaged a photographer through Facebook, telling her I really admired her beautiful macro work. I was really surprised when she told me to come over and have a go at it myself. So off I went. I don't consider myself a macro photographer at all but after she pointed me in the right direction, she just let me experiment and do my own thing, with this as (one of the) results. And she really got me enthusiastic about the beauty of the 'little world' out there. When I thanked her for her time and guidance she told me that she was glad to be able to return the favor. It turned out that a year before, me and my friend had taken her out on a canoe trip in the Gambia, when the rest of her (all male) group had all paired up and left her out. Goes to show that a little kindness goes a long way... Inspired by Marianne Brouwer. Canon EOS 1D X mark II Canon EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM ISO 200, f3,5, 1/400s

  • I'm still enjoying the roe deer in the wildflower field almost every night. Got literally 1000s of pictures of them, beautifully posing between the flowers. But every once in a while, the bucks get really excited because the rutting season is right around the corner. And it does become more interesting when it's not only a beautiful pose, but something is really happening. This one got a glimpse of a rival in the adjoining field and decided to go for it. A racing roe deer buck with dozens of flowers surrounding it, makes for the ultimate challenge for the autofocus. And I've got só many shots to prove it.. I couldn't have been more thrilled when he took a gigantic jump right over the flowers to get to his opponent quickly, just airborne long enough for the autofocus to pick up. Happy!!
