  • 8 mei 2019 A plausible theory states that the chapel would have been built around 996, under Otto III. He is said to have built it for his mother, Empress Theophanu, who died at Valkhof but was buried in Cologne. Charlemagne's chapel in Aachen (now part of the Aachen cathedral) served as an example for the construction, which can be seen in the special sixteen-angled shape of the chapel. There is an open eight-sided space in the middle of the chapel. The chapel is the only remaining Romanesque central building in the Netherlands. Because of the similarities with the Aachen palatine chapel, the age of the Valkhof chapel was long overestimated; the chapel is said to date back to the 8th century, making it by far the oldest building in the Netherlands. The portal shows influences of Carolingian architecture and is probably the oldest part of the chapel. The wallwork on the outside of the chapel has been changed several times, while the eight-sided core of the building has been raised with a defense tower. On the Valkhof are also the remains of the apse of the Sint-Maartenskapel (Barbarossa ruin), built in the 12th century.

  • 8 mei 2019 The Barbarossa ruin in the Dutch city of Nijmegen, also known as Sint-Maartenskapel, is a remnant of the Valkhof, a palace that was rebuilt in 1155 by Emperor Frederik Barbarossa. The ruin is a tuff stone apse and contains spolia from different architectural styles from Roman and Carolingian times.

The Waal is a Dutch river that is part of the Rhine Delta. The main arm of the Rhine. The Waal goes up to the old confluence of the Waal and the Meuse (today, Afgedamde Maas), near Woudrichem, it becomes the Merwede which flows towards the North Sea by several routes; most of the water flows via the Noord, the New Meuse (Nieuwe Maas) and the Nieuwe Waterweg. Nijmegen is the largest city on the Waal. Although the historic city is located on the left bank, the town also extends on the right bank for a few years (Lent, Oosterhout) as part of the northern extension of the city (Waalsprong - Saut-du-Waal) . Thus this commune is the only one to be located on both banks of the river.
