  • A substation is a part of an electrical generation, transmission, and distribution system. Substations transform voltage from high to low, or the reverse, or perform any of several other important functions. Between the generating station and consumer, electric power may flow through several substations at different voltage levels. A substation may include transformers to change voltage levels between high transmission voltages and lower distribution voltages, or at the interconnection of two different transmission voltages. The word substation comes from the days before the distribution system became a grid. In a Dutch transformer house, high voltage of 10 or 6 kV is converted to low voltage. Most of these date back to the 1920s. In order to prevent these older characteristic buildings from disappearing, a number of them have been declared a national or municipal monument.

  • The Greate Wierum wind engine, which was built in 1921, is one of the larger Frisian American wind engines with its 11-meter flight and 30 blades. The mill is of the Herkules Metallicus type and is located about a kilometer south of Lutkewierum on the Oude Ried, halfway along the road to Scharnegoutum. The mill, which is owned by the Wetterskip Fryslân, is fully functional and can be visited by appointment. The Groote Wierumerpolder is a listed national monument. This type of mill was often used in the Netherlands in the first half of the 20th century for the drainage of smaller polders. The wind motor or rose mill was only in use for a limited period of time, because electric pumping stations eventually displaced them. The larger wind engine has twenty to thirty blades, a concrete substructure, a platform and is usually of the brand Herkules (type Metallicus); This type was commercially available in the 1920s and was imported in The Netherlands by R.S. Stokvis & Sons. . The mill was developed in the United States by Daniel Halladay and was used for irrigation purposes. A modified shape with a smaller wheel was produced in Europe by Herkules Metallicus in Dresden. In The Netherlands it was used as a polder mill. About 200 of these mills were placed between 1902 and 1925, especially where a steam pumping station would be too big and too expensive. This was particularly the case in North Holland and Friesland. Some 70 windmills of this type can still be found. A big difference with the Dutch windmill is that the American wind engine has one or two wind vanes. The wind engine therefore does not have to be turned in the wind by a miller.
