  • Our last view of Edam is of the Petersburch a neo-Renaissance style former office of the post and telegraph just across the dam converted now into the Bed & Breakfast Artimare and home of a small permanent exhibition about the meermin van Edam or Mermaid of Edam. The story of the mermaid is actually supported by historical record also referenced as the Zeewijf, Watervrouwe, or Groennewijf though whatever the label used her first name given to her by Edam was Minne. The story goes that in 1403 a major storm caused the dikes that separated lake Purmermeer from the Zuiderzee to fail and a mermaid became trapped in the lake, she was noticed by the repair crews sent to fix the dike and then finally captured by two local milkmaids from Edam that over time befriended her. The people of Edam cleaned up this wild child of the sea and though she was unable to speak any known language they made her welcome and she in turn brought fame to the city. Unfortunately Edam’s mermaid attracted the attention of one the most powerful cities at the time Haarlem, how it came to pass is unsure but the people of Edam presented the mermaid to the city of Haarlem where they treasured her and installed her in a house on the Grote Houtstraat where she finished her days running a spinning wheel and as a devout church goer. I took this on Sept 14th, 2017 with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens at 35mm 1/10 sec f/11 ISO100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , Luminar and DXO Disclaimer: My style is a study of romantic realism as well as a work in progress

  • The most visited Cheese market in the Netherlands is the Edam market most likely due to its proximity to Amsterdam but it still has an authentic feel and a faithful recreation of a market day cut from history and displayed every summer Wednesday from 10:30am to 12:30pm. Edam was granted the rights to hold a cheese market in 1520 and half a century later was granted the rights of a Kaaswaag or Weigh House, the Kaaswaag displayed in this image dates from 1778 and with the market square is one of the prettiest sights in Edam. The market ceased commercial activities in 1922 when cheese production moved to factories only to be reopened in 1989 as an easy if not cheesy day trip for Amsterdam tourists. The Wednesday show takes you through the process of bringing a load of cheese to market, the cheese master tastes the incoming load for quality by drilling a sample into a random wheel and this determines the price per measure from there the cheese is loaded onto de waag or the scale for measure and payment calculation. I took this on Sept 14th, 2017 with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens at 28mm 1/20 sec f/11 ISO100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , Luminar and DXO Disclaimer: My style is a study of romantic realism as well as a work in progress

  • Probably the cutest little church in the Netherlands and the first to bring to mind the old saying that something or somebody is “all hat”, The Church of Our Lady or I should say what remains of it after a massive fire in 1882 is pictured here. The original structure made this church almost cathedral sized, its construction dating from the 14th century while the bell tower appeared during the mid 16th century and in 1972 the tower itself almost collapsed from structural damage from the 19th century fire it had to be shored up resulting in the slight lean that is viewed today. The carillon here is truly special and comes from bell casting royalty, the bells were poured in 1566 by Pieter van den Ghein or Vanden Gheyn of the most famous bell maker family of Europe, the bells continue to play lovely melodies every 15 minutes to this day and is one of the oldest examples of an external carillon in the Netherlands. Just as a note for those that read and follow my posts I am off for a summer staycation at my cottage for the next seven days with my posts to continue next Monday the 27th I hope everyone returns to see the Edam cheese market in all its glory and have a great week. I took this on Sept 14th, 2017 with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens at 34mm 1/13 sec f/11 ISO100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , Luminar and DXO Disclaimer: My style is a study of romantic realism as well as a work in progress

  • Edam is the most famous of two towns that comprise the municipality of Volendam-Edam, Edam is known most notably for its cheese but the town was also an important harbour, fishing village and ship building center in its glory, now today a common tourist day trip from Amsterdam. Edam was first charted in the mid 14th century and prospered as a maritime center for hundreds of years until in the second half of the 16th century when the town built a sluice to divert flooding water but instead changed the pattern of their harbour flow and it silted up making Edam the cheese maker it is today. The rainy view shown here is of Prinsenstraat in Edam and reminds me to mention that I am usually much happier with shots of local street views that capture the essence of a place instead of shooting the local monuments, not that I don’t shoot the local attractions as well but invariably I am always much happier with simpler subject matter and shots less taken. I took this on Sept 14th, 2017 with my D750 and Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens at 82mm 1/13 sec f/11 ISO100 processed in LR, PS +Lumenzia, Topaz , Luminar and DXO Disclaimer: My style is a study of romantic realism as well as a work in progress
