Landsmeer, Nederland What you see here is a monument with propeller blades of a Vickers-Wellington Mk. 1C (LN-C) bomber in the Landsmeerderveld, between Amsterdam and Landsmeer. On the night of September 28-29, 1941, an air fleet (of a total of 41 aircraft) of the Royal Air Force (R.A.F.) bombed the Italian city of Genoa. Eight of them were Wellington Mk. 1C bombers. After a difficult flight over the Alps and the bombing in Italy, they returned to Waterbeach home in England. The attack was said to be a success. However, three Wellingtons crashed and two others went missing. One of the missing bombers was de T2879. On board a Canadian, two New Zealanders, two Englishmen and an Australian. Due to low-hanging clouds, the crew probably thought that they were already flying safely over England when they jumped out of the plane on the orders of the captain. However, they appeared to fly above the North Sea and all crew members ended up in the sea and drowned. The Wellington flew unmanned at that time, made a turn and flew via IJmuiden towards Amsterdam. Due to a lack of fuel and at the same time being attacked by anti-aircraft guns, they crashed in the Landsmeerderveld at 07.42 am. The Germans attemped to salvage the aircraft, which failed because it had been weakened too far in the swampy pasture. An attempt in 1976 also failed. The wreck was not recovered until the spring of 1995. Below the monument are the names of the killed crew. Ian James Robertson and Hugh McLennan MacDonald washed up on Texel beach, William Raymond James Brown in Harlingen and the other three (Edward Fieldhouse, Joseph Stewart Parry and Alfred William Musgrave Chapman) have never been found.
