  • This is the 2nd of two EF's that I found at Te Rapa today. 30042 is one of three EF's that received the Tranz Rail Black (or Bumble Bee) livery. The other two are 30013 and 30071.

  • Once again I've ended up seeing KiwiRail's newest locomotive. This time we see her at Te Rapa.

  • One of three Hitachi TR's that KiwiRail have in the Waikato area, and one of two I found at Te Rapa. This locomotive was built by the Japanese company Hitachi in 1969, making her 50 years old in 2019. This engine is positively youthful in comparison to 367, which was sitting directly behind 851. TR 367 was built 12 years earlier, in 1957. When built, 851 was originally numbered as TR 181. She was renumbered in 1978, as part of the TMS numbering system. As far as I know, this engine was repainted in the International Orange livery in 1983. As you can see, 851's radiator grille has been altered. I honestly don't know why this was done, and I also think it detracts a bit from the overall appearance of the engine.

  • Sitting at Te Rapa yard on a sunny Monday morning. Between them was DL 9573. For me, seeing one of KiwiRail's oldest engines alongside their newest is quite an amusing sight.

  • Sitting between two classmates at Te Rapa yard. Behind her is 436, with 851 in front. TR 367 is one of the oldest engines on KiwiRail's roster. She was built by A&G Prices of Thames in 1957, which makes her a staggering 62 years old in 2019. When built, she was originally numbered as TR, being renumbered as 367 in . The way to tell the older Price TR's from the slightly newer ones is by looking at the grilles on the front. 367's is smaller that the grille on 436. The latter engine was built six years after 367 - in 1963.

  • Sitting idle in the yard at Te Rapa. This locomotive was by Toshiba of Japan in 1985, and assembled at Addington Workshops in Christchurch. 4032 is part of a class of just five locomotives. The other DSJ's are 4004, 4017, 4045 and 4060. In 2004, 4032 became one of two DSJ's to be repainted in the Toll Rail livery. In more recent times, her cab has been repainted, for reasons I will probably never find out. I must say, the new livery on the cab doesn't go well with the shades of colour on the Toll Rail livery.

  • This was one of two Price TR's I found at Te Rapa. Impressively this one is still in the Fruit Salad/International Orange livery, and even retains the Tranz Rail logo at the front. 436 was built by A&G Prices of Thames in 1963 - which makes her 56 years old in 2019. 1963 was also the year in which my Dad was born. TR 436 was originally numbered as TR 110, and received the number 436 in 1978, as part of the TMS numbering system.

  • There were a good mix of old/filthy and new/spotless DL's at Te Rapa today. As you can see, 9377 was one of the filthier ones.

  • The 31-year old locomotive is seen idling at Te Rapa yard. As you can see, she is need of a wash and a repaint. It's quite interesting to see an engine that has never been repainted, especially when you consider the fact that this engine has been in service since 1988. Behind her was another EF.

  • Sitting in the sun at Te Rapa. As you can see, the engine still carries the Toll Rail livery, a livery now carried only by around seven shunters. For some reason, the cab has been repainted. I wonder why.
