  • We're still with The Gulls at Day's Bay on the eastern edge of Wellington Harbour...! This Southern Black-Backed Gull could almost be heard muttering "Get into place!" as she tried so hard to get that last feather into line. In fact she was trying so hard that I thought she was going to get herself swamped by the wall of sea water rushing towards her... So did the incoming wave reach her? Of course not. As it hissed to a tired halt just inches from her feet, the bird made one final attempt to get the out-of-place feather under control and, finally satisfied with her efforts, promptly lay down on the sand and went to sleep...! What a life...! Thanks for visiting my Site Folks, and thanks especially for taking the time and trouble to leave a Comment; it's always nice to hear from you...! • This set of photos featuring New Zealand's Southern Black-Backed Gulls were taken a couple of weeks ago at Day's Bay on the eastern shores of Wellington Harbour. I had hoped to find some Black Oystercatchers but they were nowhere to be seen, so I had to be content with the Gulls - and a delicious freshly baked Cheese Scone from a nearby cafe! This Image is here because I love the snowy white Down-type feathers that lie beneath this big Gull's wings! And no: this bird wasn't about to take off. Rather, he'd just finished preening himself - a process that took nearly 30 minutes - and, apparently satisfied with his efforts, was now simply rearranging his wings. Why, I could almost hear him mutter, "Ah... That feels good!". • We're back from Darfield (Previous photos) and are admiring the ease with which a Southern Black-Backed Gull rides the chop kicked up by a strong, cold Northerly whipping across Wellington Harbour... Listen carefully, and you'll hear the bird crying, "Yee haa... This is the Life for me!" • Red sky at night The concept of "Red sky at night, shepherd's delight. Red sky in the morning, shepherd's warning" first appears in the Bible in the book of Matthew. It is an old weather saying often used at sunrise and sunset to signify the changing sky and originally known to help the shepherds prepare for the next day's weather. Despite there being global variations in this saying such as "Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in morning, sailors warning", the scientific understanding behind such occurrences remain the same. Why does red sky appear at sunrise and sunset? The saying is most reliable when weather systems predominantly come from the west as they do in the UK. "Red sky at night, shepherds delight" can often be proven true, since red sky at night means fair weather is generally headed towards you. A red sky appears when dust and small particles are trapped in the atmosphere by high pressure. This scatters blue light leaving only red light to give the sky its notable appearance. A red sky at sunset means high pressure is moving in from the west so therefore the next day will usually be dry and pleasant. "Red sky in the morning, shepherds warning" means a red sky appears due to the high-pressure weather system having already moved east meaning the good weather has passed, most likely making way for a wet and windy low-pressure system.
