  • Throughout the world there are special places, usually identified as "spas", which are associated with the concept of 'healing waters'. Hanmer Springs thermal waters and alpine environment make such a place. In 1860, the NZ Government recognised these healing opportunities and reserved the springs and surrounding area for a spa resort in the tradition of spa towns worldwide. The Government Sanatorium (which opened in 1897) was the first of a series of therapeutic facilities to be developed on this site. The Sanatorium accommodated 18 patients under the care of a residential medical officer, but it was destroyed by fire in 1914. The 'Queen Mary Hospital for Sick and Wounded Soldiers' (Soldiers' Block) opened in 1916 on the same site close to the thermal springs. The hospital was later extended with two more wings, and a working farm also provided rehabilitation for patients.

  • The original nurses at the Hanmer Springs Hospital were male and lived in the nearby village. When the treatment of female patients began, more suitable living conditions were required for female staff. Built in 1928, this building type is rare nowadays but continued a 400yr.old tradition of using the Georgian style for a hospital building. The Hostel provided 56 single rooms with shared bathroom facilities. A variety of communal living spaces opened out upon a spacious outdoor area, an important feature to create homely conditions for the nurses.
