  • 9 Tyne St., in Oamaru's historic Victorian Quarter Joseph Smith's Grain Store was built in 1882, and is probably the most ornamental grain store in NZ! Smith's Grain Store has had a variety of uses including office and printing works for the Oamaru Mail for 64 years, the newly-formed South Oamaru Presbyterian congretation met there before Columba Church was built, a dance hall, skating rink, the first home of the North Otago Farmers' Co-op and lastly a joinery factory. Today Smith's Grain Store flies the Union Jack flag, and the large open space is used as an accessway between Tyne and Harbour Sts and a venue for community functions. New stairs have provided good access to the first floor which is now a gallery hosting works by local artists.

  • ...photographed in a field on the outskirts of Oamaru, Otago, June 2016. OLIVE: The small seine boat OLIVE was built by Ernie Harvey (1882 - 1967) in Thames NZ in 1934 for Lewis Morgan Hayward. Hayward (1890 - 1971) was a fish curer, and also a professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1910s. He played at representative level for New Zealand (Heritage ? 76 [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_Zealand_Kiwis_represent...]), and for Thames as a Prop. He owned (or was a partner in) one of the Thames "Fish Sheds" as they were called in the old days: Shortland Fish Co.Ltd at the Shortland Wharf. In 1940, OLIVE was registered as "suitable for wartime purposes": No.TS21 owned by L.M. Hayward of Thames with a 44hp Kelvin motor and dimensions of 43’x11’x4'. In 1946, post WWII, OLIVE was sold to the large fishing company Sanfords, along with the Danish seine license. She ran onto a reef off Crusoe Island near Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf in 1949, and was restored privately... TOKATEA: Much later, she became TOKATEA, when bought by the New Zealand Government as a Fisheries Patrol vessel (Tokatea is the name of the mountain ridge between Coromandel town and Kennedy Bay, site of extensive gold-mining activity in the 1870s). ENNA DE: About 1965, Bert Subritzky (founder of the sea transport company Subritzky Shipping Line) bought TOKATEA and renamed her ENNA DE after his wife, the former Enna De Vera Davenport. WAITIKA: She was spotted, derelict (that's the vessel, not Bert's wife!) at Lake Dunstan in 2008, and later at Oamaru in 2011, with her name changed to WAITIKA. - from the site "Waitemata Woodys" [waitematawoodys.com/tag/waitika/]: "Woodys" refers to the many old wooden vessels that used to ply Auckland's Waitemata Harbour. ===== As ENNA-DE, she was bought by Wanaka Lake Services (the Miller brothers) in 1973 and carried up to 50 passengers on scenic cruises around Lake Wanaka...where she eventually sank sometime in the 1990s. - from the Classic Yacht Association of New Zealand [classicyacht.org.nz/cyaforum/search/WAITIKA/]. ===== I stumbled across WAITIKA a few years ago in a field on the outskirts of Oamaru. A passerby told me it had been salvaged after sinking in Lake Wanaka. At this stage I can find nothing about the sinking...do YOU know anything?
