  • This was the scene outside McDonalds Kaiapoi – on Level Three/Day One. The NZ Covid-19 Lockdown restrictions were eased (slightly!) to Level Three today. Literally DOZENS of motorists were queued up to get their first “fix” of ‘Maccas’ in five weeks! Tragic!!! And the line hadn’t eased since the doors opened at dawn! OMG, you’d think these people had been STARVING right through the lockdown!

  • When shopping at the local supermarket during Alert Level 4/Week Three, I noticed the levels of flour and eggs were very low! Lots of homebodies must be trying their hand at baking, to alleviate their Lockdown Boredom... And then lo and behold! The NZ supermarket giant Foodstuffs announces it has sold sold more than 1.5 million kilograms (1500 tonnes) of additional flour in the last four weeks, compared to the same period last year. • It happened so fast...! No sooner had the government put New Zealand into Alert Level 3, than THIS flashed onto our tv screens on 23 March 2020: in 48 hours (ie: on 25 March), we would be in Alert Level 4 - full lockdown. We braced ourselves for life as we'd never known it before...

  • Unleaded petrol price @ 23 April 2020... $1.67L is the lowest general price for Unleaded 91 seen in the South Island since at least 2016 - a good 50c drop on the norm. Of course, with plummeting fuel consumption under Covid-19 restrictions, NZ fuel companies "have been left holding the baby" and their storage tanks are all full! Once movement restrictions ease, expect price shifts galore...
