  • The Bay of Islands Vintage Railway is a small heritage operation running from Kawakawa to Taumarere. It's currently the most northerly railway in all of New Zealand, with the most southerly being the Invercargill to Bluff branch. The BOIVR is a surviving portion of the Otiria to Opua line.

  • Running around her train at Kawakawa station. This engine was built in 1949, originally for the Whakatane Board Mills Railway. Drewry actually built two of these 0-6-0 shunters for the line, with the second following in 1955. They bare a strong resemblance to the NZR DS class. In 1999 the two Whakatane engines left their old line and were transferred to Forest Loaders in Portland. They stayed in Portland until 2017, when they were both moved to the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway. 2258 is named 'Esmae', while her sister engine - 2489 - is still in the FL Portland orange and white livery.
