  • Took 3 year old Grace and her 9 month old Brother to see the Ducks the other day, and whilst the children (and especially Grace) were busy admiring the big collection of Mallard's on the pond, this rather handsome Pukeko (who also answers to the name "Australasian Swamp Hen") walked into the "spotlight" just at the right moment...! • Time to move away from The Birds... I went out to Maymourn the other day; its about 10 miles north-east of Upper Hutt and is where my school bus route used to start. I was hoping for some Bird activity, but on this particular afternoon, the local Mallards, Paradise Shelducks and Gulag Geese (which are all photogenic in their own right) were simply not interested in posing for a photographer on such a hot afternoon. However, immediately to the west of the pond was this Hay Paddock - and I rather liked the single blade of Rye Grass that the Hay-making Contractor had missed, and well: here it is! Hay Making (of course) has changed now; as the Vicar of the Parish, I used to love paying a "Pastoral Visit" to local farmers and to helping them heave the oblong Bales up onto the trailer (so long as I was wearing old trousers and football socks on my hands!). :-)) And as for the meal in the Hay Paddock: now that was ALWAYS delicious: thick freshly baked home-made bread, with thick butter slapped on, and with thick slices of home-kill cold roast mutton between the slices of bread - and it was all washed down with strong, sweet black tea... Yes, those were the days my friends...!!! Hay Making is all mechanized now, and these bales are obviously too big to manhandle... I guess they call it "Progress", but yes: those were the days...! Something to hum along to; Mary Hopkins from back in 1968: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QO9A9u4GyGc Thanks for visiting my Site Folks, and thanks especially for taking the time and trouble to leave a Comment; it's always nice to hear from you...! • This sign along the trail was pretty neat. This one isn't Peppy, but Peppy did come up and say hi. What a friendly (and kind of loud) fellow! If you can't read the sign from the photo: Hi I'm 'Peppy the Alpaca. I'm very friendly and jump up at the fence to greet you. I do not spit. I just get excited and love people. Yes you can pat me. (Someone has written 'at your own risk')

  • First ride since the dreaded 'Man Flu' or whatever I have had for a few weeks. Good to get out and hopefully build my fitness back up. Been back in NZ for a bit, I do have a few more shots to put up from the UK, but all the bike ones are up now. ;) Funnily enough I have taken almost the same photo a little while back.

  • You met the Australian Coot in the previous Image; now meet its New Zealand cousin the Pukeko! (Pronounced "Poo-keck-o"). Broadly speaking, the bird is known as a South-West Pacific Swamp Hen, but this Swamp Hen forms part of a super-species cluster along with the Western Swamp Hen, the African Swamp Hen, the Grey-Headed Swamp Hen, the Philippine Swamp Hen and the Black-Backed Swamp Hen. Their territories range from the western Mediterranean through Africa and Asia to Polynesia. ** The birds are common through-out much of New Zealand. Although they can fly if they really have to, they prefer to walk away from danger whenever possible. This preference can have disastrous consequences (for the bird!) if it mis-gauges the speed of an on-coming vehicle...! As an aside, the Pukeko is mentioned in the Maori myth "How The Kiwi Lost Her Wings". In the myth, several birds of the forest are asked to come down from the trees to eat the bugs on the ground and thus save the forest. However, all give excuses except the kiwi who is willing to give up its colours and its ability to fly. The Pukeko's excuse is that it looks too damp down there, and it does 't want to get its feet wet. As a result, the Pukeko is punished for its reluctance, and is told it must now live forever in the swamps! *** The photo (which is SOOC) was taken alongside the pond at Maoribank (a few minutes north of Upper Hutt); the Lens was hand-held and manually focused; the background is the waters of the pond! ** nzbirdsonline.org.nz/species/pukeko *** en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australasian_swamphen Thanks so much for visiting my Site, and thanks especially for taking the time and trouble to leave a Comment; it's always nice to hear from you...! • I had ridden one lap of the Whitemans/Mangaroa Valley loop of 40kms but it was cold and wet, so I decided to do a second lap as the light drizzle stopped, so continued on for 80kms. I'd have felt guilty and lazy if I had stopped at 40km and spent the rest of the afternoon being annoyed at myself.

  • The sun was still climbing when this shot was taken of the foothills of the Orongorongo Mountains... The narrow roadway within the scene above climbs up to Tunnel Gully - a Reserve so named because the railway line over to the Wairarapa province once ran through a tunnel in what is now the Reserve, but in 1952 a tunnel beneath the mountains was completed and the track in this area was ripped up. I've tried several times to capture this tranquil scene, but the dark green of the trees in the foreground usually meant that the soaring mountains in the background were harshly bleached to a wishy-washy horrible off-white!. However, on this particular morning, ultra-careful framing brought a degree of success - and with it a reminder that if at first you don't succeed...!
