Girdlestone Peak Mount Ruapehu - New Zealand
Girdlestone Peak Mount Ruapehu - New Zealand

  • Geographical coordinates of the taken: 39°24'19"S - 175°25'18"O
  • Girdlestone sits high (2658m) and isolated at the south-eastern end of the massif. It has the most peak-like countenance; reasonably steep on all sides and with a range of climbing routes to choose from. A strong cold gusty wind blowing off the mountain made using the long lens quite difficult so this image is a little soft but still acceptably sharp to my eye. • After a few days of wintery weather that brought snow to many parts of NZ, and despite the forecast for today, I decided the 2 hour drive to Mount Ruapehu may be worth it. And this is the result - a typical NZ scene with the snowy mountain framed by native NZ bush. A strong, gusty and very cold wind blowing off the mountain made the use of a long lens a little problematic, but still good fun! Girdlestone sits high (2658m) and isolated at the south-eastern end of the massif. It has the most peak-like countenance; reasonably steep on all sides and with a range of climbing routes to choose from. An image best viewed large. • For my video; youtu.be/NrWXTV7cGDs The Overlander was a long-distance rail passenger train between Auckland and Wellington in the North Island of New Zealand, along the North Island Main Trunk (NIMT). It was operated by Tranz Scenic. The service was replaced from 25 June 2012 by the Northern Explorer. It was called one of the best-value scenic rail trips in the world by the British Guardian. It is also acknowledged as one of the world's classic scenic rail journeys. Ohakune, New Zealand The New Zealand DC class locomotive is a type of diesel-electric mainline locomotive on the New Zealand rail network, operated by KiwiRail on freight trains, and formerly on long-distance passenger trains. The class was rebuilt from the DA class in the late 1970s and early 1980s, mainly in Australia. After the DA class, they were the most numerous class of diesel locomotive on New Zealand's railway network and remained numerically dominant until the mid-2010s when withdrawals began. Builder; General Motors Canada (original builder) Clyde Engineering, Australia (re-builder, 80 units) NZR Hutt Workshops, Lower Hutt, New Zealand (re-builder, 5 units) Maximum speed 100 km/h (62 mph)

  • The Old Coach Road trail runs between Horopito and Ohakune in the North Island of New Zealand. The road originally ran between these rail-heads before this last section of the North Island Main trunk was completed in 1908. Part of the trail also follows the original main trunk that was bypassed for curve easement during electrification in the 1980s. This is the old CTC machine control desk that was originally installed at Taihape station to control the Main Trunk signalling between Marton and Waiouru.
