  • Train 390 from Palmerston North arrives into Ohaupo with two class 30 electric locomotives at the head. On this daythe train paused at a red signal on the main track because of congestion ahead at Hamilton's Te Rapa yard. This train continues its journey to Mount Maunganui from Te Rapa later in the day with diesel traction.

  • 30007 and 30059 combine to work 390 freight north through the small town of Ohaupo. 30007 is wearing "International Orange", a scheme that is quite well represented on this class. Of note is the smaller number near the trailing cab, most locomotives in this scheme feature a large white number towards the centre of the carbody. 30007 is also the class leader - delivered from Brush Traction in 1986 for testing. The section of the North Island Main Trunk between Te Rapa and Palmerston North is electrified and some of the freight trains on this section are hauled by the EF Class electrics, whilst others are hauled by diesels (avoiding the need to switch locomotives twice between Auckland and Wellington). In December 2016, it was announced that the class were to be withdrawn and replaced with DL Class diesel-electric locomotives.

  • On a dull and wet November morning, train 225 rolls to a stop at Ohaupo on the mainline. The reson for this is the imminent arrival from the south, of train 390, which will take the passing siding in the foreground. Train 225 has three locomotives, but only theEF electrics are providing traction power as the DL class diesel is just along for the ride on a probable power-balancing move.

  • For a while now , it has been official practice to marshall DL locomotives as leader when mixed with older traction types (due to purported superior cab environments). The practice is evident here, with DL9446 leading DX 5016 as they power Train 228 through Ohaupo.

  • Train 229 is about 30 minutes into its journey from Te Rapa yard Hamilton to Palmerston North here at Lake Road just south of Ohaupo. 229s origin is Westfield yard in Auckland and the journey from there to Hamilton is undertaken with diesel traction earlier in the day. Loading is added or removed whilst at Te Rapa and (usually) electric traction is substituted.

  • EF30013 brings a short infrastructure train through Ohaupo. A single ballast hopper and a long welded-rail wagon set make up the load which will have originated at the yard in Palmerston North, Te Rapa yard in Hamilton being the destination. The EF locomotive wears the long obsolete "Baird-Era" Tranz Rail black and yellow livery, often referred to as "Bumble Bee"
