  • Visit small town New Zealand and you’ll likely find many of the same structures; a former Bank of New Zealand, a post office and a war memorial. In Rakaia the old wooden Bank of New Zealand building is the work of prolific colonial architect W B Armson. From 1866 to his death in 1889 he designed banks for all the major players present in New Zealand; the Bank of New Zealand, the Bank of New South Wales. the Union Bank of Australia, the Bank of Australasia, the Colonial Bank and the National Bank. His banks ranged from simple wooden structures to elaborate masonry structures. His 1881 Rakaia bank was similar in style to colonial pubs (also found in every New Zealand town) and earned it the nickname of ‘the dry pub’ with locals. Kodak Portra 400 film shot on a Bronica ETRS with 75mm lens. Scanned on an Epson V800.

  • Visit small town New Zealand and you’ll likely find many of the same structures; a former Bank of New Zealand, a post office and a war memorial. The Rakaia Post Office was opened in April 1911 by the Hon T. Mackenzie, Acting Postmaster General. The Press reported that “the contractors for the building were Messrs Calvert and Co. of Christchurch, who had recently built a number of similar Government buildings in Canterbury. The cost of erection was £1700.” The building featured gas lighting. “The office is lit by gas generated from petrol by a Pead hot-air engine. The entrance, office, yard, and outbuildings are all lit by incandescent burners. This is only the second installation of the gas in the Dominion. Indeed, no expense has been spared to make the office one of the most up-to-date in the country districts of the Dominion.” Kodak Portra 400 film shot on a Bronica ETRS with 75mm lens. Scanned on an Epson V800.

  • Visit small town New Zealand and you’ll likely find many of the same structures; a former Bank of New Zealand, a post office and a war memorial. The Rakaia First World War cenotaph was unveiled by Minister of Defence Sir Heaton Rhodes on Anzac Day 1922, and lists the names of 53 men from the district who died in World War One. After World War Two a further 24 names were added for men who died in that conflict. At the opening the Ashburton Guardian reported that “on parade were about 50 returned men in mufti, and a large number of Territorials in uniform. The children from various schools were massed behind seats occupied by relatives of those whose names were on the monument. The Salvation Army Band from Ashburton was in attendance, and helped with the hymns and the marching.” “After the completion of the ceremony a very large number of those present adjourned to St. Mark’s Schoolroom where the ladies of the Red Cross dispensed afternoon tea.” Kodak Portra 400 film shot on a Bronica ETRS with 75mm lens. Scanned on an Epson V800.
