  • Comments by Hugh Francis, ex RNZAF Navigator, 31 Mar 2020: “Sextant - Hughes Hand-Held Bubble Sextant Mk IXBM. Manufactured by Henry Hughes and Sons, Essex, England, for the Air Ministry (1946+) The sextant was a hand-held Hughes Mk 9 BM bubble sextant that was issued to each navigator for taking astro observations during training on Devons; and, on Sunderlands. It was in a large wooden case which was quite heavy to lug around – it weighed 11.75lbs! In the Bristol Freighter the sextant was installed to the rear of the aircraft by the table. The Hastings also had the same sextant installed in the aircraft. Navigating the Freighter at night (and the day too) was a bugger because you had to open the hatch to climb down the ladder - then climb over or around the freight to the rear of the aircraft – get up onto the table then to select the stars for “fix”, left one panting. At 6000 ft for example it would be cold and with less oxygen and it would take the eyes ages to focus properly. Then the process was repeated to return to the navigator's table upstairs with much more puffing. This would be repeated at least twice an hour. The averaging mechanism on the sextant ran for 2 minutes, so with three observation four minutes apart a three-star fix took 10 minutes then the calculations and plotting about another 10 minutes – the Navigator was indeed very busy. Astro would become not so accurate with the aircraft in slight turbulence even with the pilot hand flying to keep on heading, altitude and constant speed. The auto-pilot engaged was not good for the taking of astro “shots.” I did my conversion at TSU late 1965. Not long after that the aircraft were modified and periscopic sextants were installed on the flight deck for use at the Nav position. This meant the Nav did not have to leave his seat which was great; and, also fixes became much more accurate. BTW the odd astrodome was cracked if a pilot threw a banana skin or anything else hard out the window." Photo: Hugh Francis
