  • An unusual small flowering plant in the Palmerston North esplanade gardens - I couldn't find this exact flower on the google, but similar seemed to indicate it may be a striped cobra lily of some sort - which seems to fit the look of them! ADDITION: A big thank you to my Flickr consultant botanist Petera3015 who once again has identified its true identity as Arisarum Vulgare or its common name 'Friar's Cowl' This group seemed to be in some sort of earnest conversation together! • The 5.2-metre-high cast bronze sculpture, called Te Pūatatangi ki Te Ika a Māui or Dawn Chorus on the Fish of Māui was created by celebrated artist Paul Dibble. After more than a decade in development, it was unveiled and blessed by Rāngitane o Manawatū and stands at the entrance of Wildbase. Dibble drew inspiration from the legend of Māui fishing up the North Island. The fish's large lips are holding up a piece of land from which a leafy tree stands, full of NZ birds. • A particularly still morning gave me this reflected view of a new art work in one of the ponds in the Palmerston North esplanade gardens. An image of the actual sculpture was not great at this time of day due to buildings in the background and some obscure lighting, but the picture in the pond was almost perfect! • Palm Drive in the PN esplanade is flanked on both sides by these massive palm trees. I struggled to get an image I liked with the number of background distractions and I didn't seem to quite be able to portray their size either. So this was my second idea - include the trunk from this side of the road looking into the head of the palm on the other …. (c) Dominic Scott 2020

  • The only lens I had was my 24-105 on the camera so I was quite pleased with this image as it is a very heavy crop, but an opportunity not to be missed! Tui are boisterous, medium-sized, common and widespread bird of forest and suburbia – unless you live in Canterbury. They look black from a distance, but in good light tui have a blue, green and bronze iridescent sheen, and distinctive white throat tufts (poi). They are usually very vocal, with a complicated mix of tuneful notes interspersed with coughs, grunts and wheezes. In flight, their bodies slant with the head higher than the tail, and their noisy whirring flight is interspersed with short glides. (c) Dominic Scott 2020
