  • Tiny Kauri Greenhood orchids (Pterostylis agathicola) growing from leaf litter between ancient kauri trees (Agathis australis) in one of the few remaining old growth kauri forest relics in the northern districts of New Zealand's North Island. While I liked the detail of the picture I posted before of this orchid, there was something missing- a sense of place. So I went back to the forest with a plan of shooting these orchids showing their natural environment, the forest floor between the mighty kauri trees. I tried to isolate the orchids by underexposing the background and using an LED light. If anyone is concerned that I am walking among kauri trees which are threatened by the soil borne, incurable and fatal kauri dieback disease, I want to make it clear that I did not leave the boardwalk for the photo and used the cleaning stations entering and leaving the forest, common sense behaviour expected from everyone visiting this threatened ecosystem. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kauri_dieback

  • Pterostylis agathicola (kauri greenhood) is a species of orchid endemic to the North Island of New Zealand. It grows in kauri (Agathis australis) forest and its distribution is restricted to the upper North Island where kauris occur. The flowers are translucent white with green stripes and brownish tips. The dorsal sepal and petals are fused, forming a hood or "galea" over the column. Pterostylis (greenhood orchids) is a genus of about 300 species of plants in the orchid family. The pollinating insect approaches the flower from downwind, as if attracted by a scent and usually lands on the galea. The insect then enters the flower and either because it has passed a balance point, or because it has touched a sensitive part of the labellum, the labellum moves forward trapping the insect. In its struggle to escape, the insect either deposits pollinia from a previously visited flower or contacts the sticky viscidium and pollinia are attached, then carried to another flower. The features of an actively-moving labellum, along with the galea, are unique to these orchids. A bit of orchid anatomy if you run your cursor over the image.
