  • This was a hard one - I don't know why - perhaps too much detail. I worked on it on and off over several days until I had the balance I wanted. I was torn between a watercolour and a traditional oils look. In the end the watercolour won out.

  • Pauatahanui Inlet is behind me; I'd just spent 30 minutes photographing a small flock of Royal Spoonbills, but I didn't have my big Sigma Lens with me (It was in the car, 2 kilometres away!) and none of the photos of the Spoonbills were worth saving! However, this scene was a rather nice "Consolation Prize"...! Happy Telegraph Tuesday, Folks! As I mentioned the other night, please be aware that if you're posting more than one photo within a 24-hour period, I may not be able to leave a Comment beneath all of your photos. I will be looking at them, and I will do my best to continue leaving Comments beneath everything you post, but... Continue to take care, keep smiling, and stay well Folks, and thanks so much for visiting my Site, and for taking the time and trouble to leave a Comment. It's always nice to hear from you...!

  • I'm not sure if these are Azaleas, Rhododendrons or something else - but they were a part of a beautiful bush at the bottom of a residential property near the edge of the Pauatahanui Inlet that just had to be photographed! (And I'm thinking that they're (maybe) Rhododendrons...!). STOP PRESS: Thanks to all who did their best to identify this bloom, and thanks especially to Victoria Carmichael for the very detailed identification; very much appreciated thanks Victoria!!! I think we'll call this an Azalea! Continue to take care, keep smiling, and stay well - and thanks so much for visiting my Site, and for taking the time and trouble to leave a Comment. It's always nice to hear from you...!

  • As we walked along the edge of a stream in Trentham Memorial Park a few days ago, 4 year old Grace muttered "Granddad, if that plastic bottle just over there gets into that stream, that will be very, very bad for the fishes!" (Who says 4 year olds aren't aware of environmental issues???). This isn't Trentham Memorial Park, and it's not a plastic bottle. It's a plastic bag of the sort that used to be used in supermarkets, and it and other debris is hooked up on some flood-related sticks and grasses in the midst of an otherwise clear stream that will shortly run into the Pauatahanui Inlet - an inlet that is an important feeding ground for a large number of birds of different species! The Inlet is already in a sick state; adding a plastic bag to the toilet papers that often line the shore is just - well - downright disappointing...! (And I hate to think what Grace will say when she sees this!). We really do need to start caring for our Environment - before it's too late... and before the 4 year olds of this world discover in 15 or 16 years that their parents and grandparents carelessly and completely destroyed fragile ecosystems... Strange... Didn't a young woman from Norway shout a similar message to us just a few weeks ago? And are we listening? As New Zealand's Covid cases continue to rise again (We're up to 7 now!!!), continue to take care, keep smiling, and stay well - and thanks so much for visiting my Site, and for taking the time and trouble to leave a Comment. It's always nice to hear from you...!

  • This was not photographed in or around Kaitaia; this was photographed at one of my happy hunting grounds not too far from where we live! As the Title suggests, it's a Spotless Crake and I have to admit: I'd never heard of such a bird until my Flickr Friend Paul mentioned it on one of our photo expeditions! (Thanks Paul). www.flickr.com/photos/minicountryman/49422929368/in/photo... I have to admit: I'm a bit disappointed with the sharpness of the shot, and next time I'll haul a tripod into the area! This is a very shy bird, but I was fortunate: I only had to wait 45 minutes for it to show itself - and then three more appeared...! It's a much smaller bird than I was expecting, but I have to admit: I was pretty chuffed to get this Lifer - even if it is slightly off key! If you have time, have a look at nzbirdsonline.org.nz/species/spotless-crake for further information...! Thanks so much for visiting my Site Folks, and thanks especially for taking the time and trouble to leave a Comment; it's always nice to hear from you...!
