  • The Tejo Estuary Natural Reserve was created in 1976. Located north of Alcochete village, the Reserve occupies and area of about 14.560 hectares, enclosing an extensive area of estuary waters, muddy areas, salines, small river islands (the ones of Póvoa, Alhandra and Lombo do Tejo) and many agricultural fields. Considered to be one of the most important natural reserves in Europe, it is the most extensive humid area of the Country, enclosing a big diversity and habitat variety. The Tejo (Tagus) Estuary is also important for the raise of several species, such as flatfish or snooks. For some migrating fish such as lamprey, eel, shad, among others, Tejo River is also the transition place between the ocean and the river. Due to its location, this humid area is a perfect place for several birds’ species. Flamingo, Marsh Harrier or the Greylag Goose also frequent this area, along with other species such as otters, bulls, Cabrera's Vole, horses, among many other mammals that also inhabit the Reserve’s territory. Inside the Tejo Estuary Natural Reserve were demarked two integral reserves: the Mouchão do Lombo do Tejo Integral Reserve, which aims for the nesting protection of some species, and the Pancas Integral Reserve. A paradisiacal scenery, the Tejo Estuary Natural Reserve makes of Lisboa the only European capital with an important natural reserve such as this one. www.getportugal.com/en/poi-reserva-natural-do-estuario-do...

Tambem o peneireiro-vulgar e a águia-d'asa-redonda sao regulares neste sítio. Neste local tambem ocorrem alguns passeriformes, sendo os mais característicos: a cotovia-de-poupa, a fuinha-dos-juncos, o rouxinol-bravo e a toutinegra-de-cabeça-preta. No Inverno aparece igualmente a felosa-comum. www.avesdeportugal.info/sitribeiraenguias.html

  • The Tagus is the largest river of Iberian Peninsula, ending in a large tidal estuary covering an area of 320 km2. About 110 km2 are intertidal areas; being 20 km2 occupied by salt marsh vegetation and 80 km2 by mudflats. Morphologically the estuary can be divided into three parts: upstream, middle and downstream sections. The upstream part, between Vila Franca de Xira and the Alcochete – Sacavém, has an average depth of 2 m and includes most mudflats. The middle part is deeper (average of 7 m), and the dowstream part reaches depths of 46 m and is the main navigation channel of the estuary. The combined effects of low average depth, strong tidal currents, and low input of river water make the Tagus a globally well-mixed estuary, with stratification being rare and occurring only in specific situations such as neap tides or after heavy rains. The Tagus estuary is meso-tidal and its circulation is mainly tidally driven. The amplitude of the tide is the controlling variable of the flowand is responsible to a large extent for the turbidity of the Tagus, which in shallow areas of upstream part of the estuary is enhanced by small high frequency wind waves. The wind is however of secondary importance for estuarine circulation. www.maretec.mohid.com/PortugueseEstuaries/Tagus/Tagus.htm
