  • Autaugaville United Methodist Church. Organized in 1822 as Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church. The founding congregation held services in a log cabin located a mile west of Autaugaville. In 1829, due to a division in the church. Half of the congregation opted to split off and organized a Methodist Protestant Church in the community of Dutch Bend, south of Autaugaville. After the split, membership at Asbury continued to grow, outgrowing the log cabin church. The Asbury members opted on building a new church in Autaugaville on a lot is located behind the present structure standing today. Prior to the American Civil War, Autaugaville was seeing a growth in population which brought prosperity to the town. Seeing this growth, the Dutch Bend Methodist Protestant Church congregation decided to relocate to Autaugaville. Sometime in the early 1850’s construction began on their new church building in Smedley Grove. During the late 1860‘s, by a special act of the General Conference the two Methodist Churches were re-united to form the Methodist Church of Autaugaville. After the reunification, the Asbury structure was sold and was converted into a cloth factory. The Smedley Grove Church was moved to its present location seen here. [] Autaugaville United Methodist Church has stood the test of time. Built in the Greek Revival style with the front façade following the temple form that was popular during the antebellum times. The bell tower crowned off with eight spires forming the “Crown of Thorns.” Today, the “Crown of Thorns” style steeple is a rare architectural feature. The interior of the sanctuary still retains the slave gallery where the slaves were allowed to set during church service. An original Rococo Revival oil chandelier still hangs from a ceiling medallion. Over the years, various improvements and additions have been made to the building. With careful preservation, much of the building’s historical integrity has been preserved. Autaugaville United Methodist Church, 207 South Autauga Street, Autaugaville, Autauga County, Alabama.
