THE GOLDEN HOUR: 60 MINUTES BETWEEN LIFE & DEATH
THE GOLDEN HOUR: 60 MINUTES BETWEEN LIFE & DEATH

  • Geographical coordinates of the taken: 33°59'33"N - 86°59'0"W
  • In emergency medicine, the Golden Hour represents the 60 minutes (or less) from which time a medically critical trauma occurs (heart attack, stroke, car accident, shooting, fall, etc.) and a surgeon/trauma team providing immediate intervention at a major medical center. Proper medical care within this Gold Hour time window is believed to yield the highest likelihood that medical treatment will prevent death. In an effectively rural area such as Cullman County (and surrounding counties), there is no Level I or Level II Trauma Center (Cullman Regional Medical Center is a Level III – see full story for definitions and list of local medical facilities). Therefore, delivering patients in need to Level 1 facilities such as University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham and Huntsville Hospital – within one hour – is extremely challenging, at best. Even with a flawless rapid response by the Cullman County 911 System and Dispatchers, Cullman County Fire and Rescue Departments and ambulance services such as Cullman EMS, the drive time to a Level I Trauma Center in Birmingham or Huntsville makes it unlikely patients will reach their destination within the Golden Hour. As a result, it has become commonplace for patients with a medically critical trauma in Cullman County to be transported via medical helicopter, rather than be driven by ground ambulances.
