  • Cascade County. Across the Missouri River from present-day Cascade is the former site of Ulidia. Ulidia began about 1878 when George Steele opened a store near a ferryboat crossing of the Missouri (Steele also owned a store in Sun River). The Ulidia post office opened in 1880 (John Dyas, postmaster) and served as the mail center for much of that part of the Montana Territory. The community name was changed to Gorham in 1885, after Thomas Gorham, manager of the Steele Store. John Dyas continued as postmaster and also later managed the store after George Steele lost the store due to backruptcy. Thomas Gorham went on to open a store across the river in the new community of Cascade and also served as the first postmaster of the Cascade post office. Gorham (the community) became Saint Clair in 1889, named after the recently-decreased baby of then-postmaster/store owner/local landowner, James Erskine. By 1893, a bridge was built across the Missouri River and the Saint Clair community quickly faded as business activity moved across the river to Cascade which had the advantage of being located along the Great Northern Railway (finished in 1887). The St. Clair post office closed in 1893 (March 27) and the community soon disappeared. Pictured is a view across the Missouri River just north of Cascade toward the Ulidia/Gorham/Saint Clair area.

  • Cascade County. Pictured is the Cascade post office building in 2013. Originally known as Dodge, Cascade began as a community to provide services to railroad workers when the Montana Central Railway line was constructed along the Missouri River in 1886. A year later, the name was changed to Cascade as the community hoped to become the county seat of the newly-created Cascade County. A post office first opened at Dodge in 1886 (August 6) with Thomas Gorham as postmaster. The name was changed to Cascade in 1887 (November 5) with Thomas Gorham continuing as postmaster.

  • Classic playground rings. The playground in the housing project where I lived as a wee lad had rings. But they were all round, not squared off at the bottom like these. Seen in Cascade,Montana. And my motorcycle photo-bombed the picture.
