  • Who knew? On my way to Montgomery, cutting north from Marianna, Fl on US 231, I wanted to see more of Alabama than Montgomery and since Dothan was the biggest small city along the way, I figured I’d just ride through and get a glimpse. The downtown looked similar to many older cities, though the buildings seemed to be occupied rather than abandoned like one often sees in older downtowns. The traffic was surprisingly heavy on the main road, which is why I took a side street and came across this surprising piece of very well-maintained Streamline Moderne architecture with odd design in the back. The name ‘GW Carver’ also rang a bell, but I couldn’t remember quite why. I wandered around outside peeking in (the doors were locked) and started to walk away when a young woman opened the door asked if I’d like to come in. Not only was she very helpful there, but that stop was the start of a new perspective on Alabama. Though not immediately evident, the design of the building makes sense when you find out that it was once a bus station. It had been abandoned for a number of years until, in 2000, it was converted into a museum and center for African-American history. I was a little slow on picking up on “GW Carver” because I’m used to hearing the full name (which wouldn’t fit on the building), “George Washington Carver”. I was also slow because I was thinking that Carver revolutionized the cotton mill so what was his name doing in the Peanut Capital (Dothan). Fortunately the attendant was very patient in helping me sort out that Carver was famous for his research on peanuts as part of good crop rotation. More on the building itself with adjacent pictures. • This picture — my picture, the one you're looking at — is the only thing I can think of that would justify the effort involved in putting all these ribbons in this tree. Nobody else's happiness at seeing the ribbons is as large as my happiness at seeing my picture of the ribbons. Which is not to say that my happiness is particularly large. • The building is set up to be a cultural center with open spaces for performances and presentations, within the context of Carver’s history. Since I was the only one there and had basically interrupted the attendant’s work day, I mostly chatted with her about the use of the space and about current race relations. What I did examine of the display was very well done. This open space here is formed from what was the white waiting room (see adjacent picture). • As was the case with bus stations in the South, there was a separate entrance marked ‘colored’ (the door to my left) that brought you into a separate waiting room, with a separate (and smaller) ‘colored’ bathroom; access to the bus platform was also through a separate exit door.
