  • One year ago today I was here in the cool Wyoming sunshine. After making a 75 mile morning run from Ogden, Big Boy 4014 (4-8-8-4 blt. by Alco in Dec. 1941), Northern 844 (4-8-4 blt. by Alco in Dec. 1944) and their Spike 150 passenger special heading home to Cheyenne paused for display for a few minutes in front of the restored depot. The train is sitting in downtown on Main 2 at about MP 917.2 of Union Pacific's Evanston Sub, the original transcontinental railroad mainline where these two steam behemoths were built to run. After a brief display the train was shoved back west to tie down on yard track near the old roundhouse for the rest of the day and overnight. The following day the journey east would continue as they'd run over the summit at Altamont and head down grade to Granger and Green River and on to Rock Springs where two nights would be spent. Given the throngs of people everywhere they stopped getting a clean unobstructed roster shot of the Big Boy was nearly impossible, but for one brief moment I pulled it off. • One year ago today I was at what seemed more like a rock concert than a railfan event....were you here too? After making a 75 mile morning run from Ogden, Big Boy 4014 (4-8-8-4 blt. by Alco in Dec. 1941) and Northern 844 (4-8-4 blt. by Alco in Dec. 1944) and their Spike 150 passenger special heading home to Cheyenne are swarmed by fans in front of the Evanston depot as they pause on Main 2. This is MP 917.2 on Union Pacific's Evanston Sub, the original transcontinental railroad mainline where these two steam behemoths were built to run. This was a sight I'd never imagined I'd see. Not only was a Big Boy back in steam on home rails but the worlds largest railroad was welcoming fans from all over the world on to their property for a party and willingly closing down a double track mainline on one of the busiest freight corridors in the nation to permit throngs of fans to clamber right up to living, breathing, steaming beasts. You had to see it to believe it! At left is the original historic UP depot built in 1900 and still the centerpiece of the small Wyoming town. Evanston, Wyoming Sunday May 12, 2019

  • I'll never forget how I felt in this moment. We drove up from Salt Lake and there she was...sitting on the mainline panting in the cool gray misty morning Wyoming air. She was alive...and on the rails for which she was built to roam.! Even with the crowds the experience was sublime...almost religous. I got that deep shiver of frisson down my spine like I do when I hear the Star Spangled Banner play...and it brought a few tears of joy down my my face. This moment won't soon be forgotten. This was the first morning of an epic western railfan adventure three days of which would be spent with Big Boy #4014 on his Spike150 celebratory run with smaller and never retired sibling #844. As they wait to start west a Z-train flies by eastbound with some old school piggy back loads still in this world dominated by stack trains. Soon the Titan of the Wasatch will start the last leg of her journey down to the great junction city of Ogden. Evanston, Wyoming Wednesday May 8, 2019
