  • My camera catches incredible detail and reality. But this image reminds me that there is much more to a scene than that. Nostalgia and dreaminess are what catches our fancy, at least mine. Intense color vibration, changing light, movement, and angles are what's important in Impressionism. • Elizabeth Nourse may not be giving me an inviting smile but since she's looking right at me she's grabbed my attention. My caveman brain is wired to stop and ascertain why she's looking at me. • Title: Harversters (1905) Artist: Anna Ancher (Danish) Material: Oil on canvas Venue: Speed Art Museum, University of Louisville, Kentucky So neatly and simply paraded out — heaven and earth, blue and gold, life and death, male and female, separation of labor, autumn, the harvest. The man would cut the harvest grain with his scythe. The Danish women would rake up and gather the straw.

Warhol: What pastel color strips do to The Last Supper

  • Hmm, an iconic scene of easter — e.g. Last Supper, Good Friday, and Pentecost Sunday — is being played with to pull us out of our ruts. When we think of the beginning of Easter, Leonardo da Vinci's now iconic Last Supper plays in our heads. Am I right? Warhol knows that. This is a derivative print of that. We modern folk are so commercially programmed to think of pastel colors around easter. Warhol knows that too. The pastel strips add vivaciousness, don't they? This image is about life, not death. They also make the image more abstract, symbolic, metaphorical. No? Inspired by Warhol, I'd like to try a black and white image and add swaths of color via blended texturing in the post-edit process to make the photograph more vivacious and metaphorical. But that's WAY easier said than done. ;-) Title: The Last Supper, 1986 Artist: Andy Warhol Material: Screen print and colored graphic art paper collage on HMP paper Venue: Speed Art Museum, University of Louisville, Kentucky
