  • The first thing you notice about Cathedral Caverns is the massive entrance. The huge opening measures 126 feet wide and 25 feet high. And it gets even better. Inside the cavern, you will find Big Rock Canyon, Mystery River and some of the most beautiful formations Mother Nature has ever created. Among them, you will see Stalagmite Mountain, The Frozen Waterfall and Goliath, a huge stalagmite column that reaches the ceiling of the cave some 45 feet above!

  • As an amateur spelunker working at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, Jay Gurley in 1952 made a statement 2,600 feet inside this cave which would not only change his life, but make it possible for people to see, appreciate and enjoy the natural wonders of Cathedral Caverns. That statement was "you know, I think we are the first to get in this far and finding this thing-just seeing it- is probably the most important thing we will ever do. Somebody must build walkways so other can see it." So, with an unwavering determination and borrowed money, he, his family.a few friends literally chiseled, poured, dynamited and moved tons of rock and sand to craft the original trails and pathways. Seven years later and for miles of wiring for lights, the caverns were opened and operated until 1974. Between 1974 and 1987 the caverns experienced a variety of difficulties and ownerships. In 1987 the property and cave were purchased by the State of Alabama and is now operated as a state park and natural tourist destination.

  • The region of the state was much different place 12,000 years ago. The great ice moved north and there were animals in the forests. The Nomadic people that utilized the massive cave entrance as a seasonal shelter where hunters' and gathers' . An archeological excavation of the cave entrance in 1988 by the University of Alabama and Jacksonville State University, discovered artifacts of early inhabitants including arrowheads, spear points, drills, knives, hide scrapers, pottery shards and animal bones. This was a gathering place for early inhabitants of Alabama dating back to the Archaic Period in 6000 B.C., some 8,000 years ago, During this period, there were probably between 50,000 and 100,000 inhabitants in Alabama who settled in centralized base camps and used areas such as Cathedral as satellite hunting/gathering camps.

  • .The streamed of Mystery River remains the same elevation throughout the cave. .Periodic flooding in the cave at its' highest point has been measured at 38 feet. .Cavern formation began some 100 to 500 thousand years ago as moving water cut this part of the Cumberland Plateau. This process is still active today and is happening very slowly. .The gigantic column called Stalagmite Mountain, is calculated to contain 2,225,000 cubic feet of flowstone. .Gurley Cave located just outside of Cathedral Caverns shares the same Mystery River, as does Cathedral. .The ceilings throughout the cavern were measured by helium balloons. .Folklore suggest that early settlers in the area knew of the caves' existence in the 1800's and that draft dodgers and deserters hid in the underground tunnels during the "War Between The States". .The Huntsville Grotto of the National Spelunkers Society completed an extensive cave-mapping project in 1994.
