  • It appears Hoots no longer hawks autos here. In my notes I wrote that this was originally the office for a motor court style motel - but I don't remember where I got that information, so I can't be sure about that. It would have been a good location for a hotel back before I-59 was built. But then again, it appears the center section was built first, then the wings on either side were added. Looking at the center section by itself, it looks a lot like a country store - so who knows? Whatever the case, it's a cool old building. Looks like it could have been built in the post WWII boom. Construction style and the doors and such look to be late 40's or early '50's.

  • Clark Byers, the gentleman who painted the Rock City Barns, approached John Jones about opening the cave on his land to the public as a tourist attraction sometime in 1962. The cave was located on what is known as the Ellis homestead. Mr. Jones, the present owner of the Ellis homestead, is a great-great grandson of James Ellis who settled the land in 1842. The cave had been known as Ellis cave, but for commercial operations the name used was Sequoyah Caverns, in honor of the great Cherokee who came up with an alphabet for the Cherokee language. It's very possible Sequoyah could have visited the cave when visiting the Cherokee who lived in this area. One notable person who did leave his signature inside the cave was Sam Houston. The cave opened to the public in 1964 and was managed and promoted by Byers for several years. Eventually the Jones family took over operations until they closed the caverns to the public after Labor Day in 2013. Naturally, one of the main ways Byers promoted this new attraction was by painting ads on barns. Some still survive, like this beauty just outside Valley Head, Alabama.
