  • Mom just finished nursing her two cub and is about to take them into the ocean in search of food for her. They are in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. NG: When sea ice retreats many miles off shore, some polar bears, like this mother and her cubs, settle along the shores of the refuge, where they are stranded until the ice is strong enough to hold their weight, and they can once again use it to hunt for seals. As climate change melts sea ice sooner in spring and delays its formation in fall, polar bears spend more time on land within the refuge. The refuge is home to the greatest density of polar bear dens in Alaska.

  • Polar bear cubs usually stay with their mother for up to 30 months. They will nurse for 18-30 months on very rich milk which is 33% fat. After the cubs leave the den the mother will start hunting seals and share it with the cubs. The polar bear's primary food source are ringed and bearded seals which depend on sea ice. Climate change has caused the sea ice to retreat more than 300 miles from shore this time of the year. The polar bears now depend on the local bowhead whale hunt to hold them over until late fall when the sea ice will return with the seals.

  • The small Inupiat village of Kaktovik is allowed to harvest up to three bowhead whale each year. The villagers rely on whale meat to sustain themselves through the long harsh winters. The blubber and other inedible whale parts are then towed out to the bone pile for the bears. Polar bears start gathering around the whale bone pile in late August looking for food. The whaling season will be starting soon but the winds and high seas are keeping the small fishing boats in the harbor.

  • We had only 2 1/2 days to shoot due to the freezing of the water which prevented access to the bears. Most of the time we had snow and overcast skies. This shot was taken under the sweetest light we had during the trip.

  • The twins are looking for anything edible among the whale bones left over from the previous years. The sea ice is over 300 miles away at this time of the year due to climate change. Polar bears rely on the ice to be able to hunt seals which is their primary food source. The cubs will survive on their mother's milk but the adult bears will need to wait until the whale hunt and then wait another month or two before the ice returns closer to shore.

  • For the past two decades, Alaska’s National Wildlife Refuges have worked alongside local communities to provide science and culture summer camps for rural youth. During these camps, students spend time outside exploring their wild backyards with teachers, mentors and elders, while gaining a better understanding of natural resource issues impacting their lives, and practicing cultural traditions with guidance from village elders. Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Kaktovik Marine Science Camp Communities Served: Kaktovik Students travel aboard a research vessel, while collecting and examining aquatic organisms, and discussing Abyssal Plains and thermoclines alongside arctic researchers. Students also learn about the near shore marine ecosystems and explore and appreciate the amazing marine resources in their backyard from the perspective of oceanographers and scientists.

  • Ketil Reitan, dog musher. It was frosting on the cake when we found out that our boat captain and polar bear guide was an active Iditarod dog musher - having finished the race 4 times so far. With summer over, the dog team training is in full gear - preparing for Iditarod 44. We were fortunate to watch Ketil training his Alaskan Huskies one afternoon in Kaktovik. Known as "The Hope from the Slope", he will represent the Iñupiat village of Kaktovik at the famous dog sled race next year. Good luck Ketil - I hope that you win!

  • Kaktovik, an isolated Arctic village located on Barter Island on the north slope of Alaska. It has maintained its Inupiat Eskimo traditions, including subsistence hunting of the bowhead whale in the fall to support their way of life. After the whale is harvested the whole village takes part in sharing the bounty. We saw several piles of whale meat from a recent harvest piled up outside of the houses - to be stored later and enjoyed in holiday meals.
