  • Mercury & Chase passenger coach train #6082 was originally built in 1939 by Budd for Pennsylvania Railroad. You can ride this excursion train at the North Alabama Railroad Museum in Chase, AL, a small suburb on the north side of Huntsville. In the background is the old Chase Nursery Company office building. At one time, Chase Nursery was the largest plant nursery in the southeast. The building was just recently purchased by the museum.

  • North Alabama Railroad Museum's former Lackawanna Alco S2 484 leads one of the museum's excursion trains through Chase, AL on March 31, 2018. NARM operates its 'Mercury & Chase' excursions over five miles of a former NC&StL branch line in the northeastern suburbs of Huntsville. The 484, which wears an attractive yet weathered NC&StL-inspired paint scheme, recently reentered service after an absence of several years following the completion of repairs to its prime mover.

  • One of the more obscure museum operations in the South is the North Alabama Railroad Museum's 'Mercury & Chase' excursions, which operate over five miles of a former NC&StL branch line through the northeastern suburbs of Huntsville, AL. Here we see an Easter excursion arriving at the siding in Normal, AL, the western end of the museum's active track, on March 31, 2018. An Alco S2 locomotive is at each end of the train. The lead unit, 484, is a former Lackawanna unit which wears an attractive, if weathered, NC&StL-inspired paint scheme. This locomotive recently reentered service after an absence of several years following the completion of repairs to its prime mover. At the other end of the train is the 213, whose pedigree is a little more convoluted, but research indicates it may have originally been with St. Louis shortlines TRRA and MRS.

  • Got stuck today at a RR street crossing for the full duration of one of these coal trains passing by. So, what to do but count? Yikes! It consisted of 136 hopper cars full of coal. I've done some reading about this coal train business and gained some insight into the subject. But was thinking they're typically about 100 cars long. This one may have been on the right side of the bell curve. It had four locos for power, two on the front and two in back, whereas more typically there's only one "pusher" bringing up the rear. Anyway, heckuva lot of coal! Here's the caption from an earlier posting of the same shot: I took this photo a few years ago but thought it worth resurfacing, if only as a reminder. It's a reminder of what it takes to feed our insatiable appetite for electric power, and all the conveniences which that energy source provides. As I noted when the pic was taken (2007), Plant Scherer, located south of Atlanta GA, burns the amount of coal carried by nearly 1,300 coal trains a year -- which works out to 2,000 miles of coal cars, or as writer John McPhee put it, "twelve million tons of the bedrock of Wyoming." The quote is from McPhee's wonderful two-part series of articles in the New Yorker. The trains he wrote about pass through Huntsville -- day and night -- on their way to Plant Scherer. And that's where this one was headed.
