  • We just had three days of snow which resulted in about 16 inches on the ground. I spent most of my time inside watching and photographing the birds through the windows. Crows, juncos, goldfinches, red-winged blackbirds, doves, tree sparrows, redpolls, several species of woodpeckers, siskin, robins, myrtle warblers, turkeys, song sparrows, etc., showed up, and around the feeder. This storm was hard on wildlife and my image above kind of tells the story. tough red-wing taking the storm head on during an april blizzard Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • It has taken me a few tries standing in the backyard, up against a spruce, holding my heavy telephoto, to capture this male redpoll. It is time for them to start heading north for the summer. Hundreds of them come and go to my backyard thistle feeder. I see mostly females and the scarce males move quickly in and out, giving little time to focus. This one was just sitting in a magnolia tree near the feeder. Yesterday I was in among thousands of sandhill cranes making images and listening to their thrilling calls, but this little bugger thills me just as much. He's pure nature here on a visit. Nature is the best psychiatrist! Life is good! thrilling hoary redpoll bound for the north country with a punked red head Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • When the snow flies I grab my camera, get in my truck, and drive the country roads. Snow makes a wonderful natural filter, and so does fog and rain. I found these turkeys running along the edge of a forest in a farmer's cornfield. They were hurrying over to a flock of about twelve turkeys feeding on some spilled corn. Look at the beard on the front one. It is dragging in the snow! turkeys in a hurry to belly-up to the corn spill in a snowstorm Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • This lotus was purchased off the Internet Amazon! It was grown in a two foot, diameter tub! It had at least a dozen blooms spread out over the summer. During the life of the bloom its color went from cream to rose-pink. The plant provided viewing pleasure all summer. Despite what it says to the left, I made this image with my Sigma 180mm macro. dancing lotus a blooming eye-catcher just out the backdoor Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • The cedar waxwings come every year when the service berries ripen. They stay until the berries are all gone. They land on the limber branches and make them dance. After eating a half dozen berries they fly up into nearby oaks, digest, and then come back for more. berry eating bird picking out a ripe one on a rainy day Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • We have a lot of deer in our area. They feed in the farm fields during the spring and fall and then move into the wooded areas in the winter. They are leery because they are hunted heavily! Bow and gun hunters help keep the numbers down. I made this image out of my truck window near the end of the day with my Pentax 150-450mm lens. This doe had another fawn, but it wouldn't move into the frame. evening deer moving out of the cover looking at me Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • Winter gave us a break this week. The temps were in the 40's F for a few days. The snow disappeared and I made a series of images in the forest with my Rokinon 14mm, 2.8 lens. This a manual focus and exposure lens that is quite inexpensive. I am very happy with it. winter trees reaching for the blue sky waiting for spring Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • I found this leaf while walking through the woods behind our home. First I saw an eye, a mouth, and an ear! It looked very cartoonish to me. Later, after making a close-up, I saw the monster in the eye----appropriate for Halloween isn't it?
