  • Richwood is a tiny settlement (calling it a "town" would be generous) a few miles (rail) west of Watertown. About a mile and a half east of here is the "Watertown West" control point, where a roughly 20-mile double track segment ends going east. This is the hold point for eastbounds that will be waiting on opposing traffic for some time (so as not to block this crossing as well as County K to the east), but 281 is just a few minutes away and thus 280 keeps coming, albeit at much reduced speed.

  • Once again, this is in order to give an oncoming westbound (this time, Amtrak No. 7) time to enter the double track section and get out of the way before the eastbound has to come to a complete stop.

  • All the Class 1 railroads treat defect detectors a little differently. CN's detectors on their ex-WC territory give an entrance message when the head end of a train first reaches it, and an exit message that includes the train direction and speed. CP's give an exit message only that includes the temperature, axle count, and track number (on double track sections), but not the direction and speed. They used to report the train length in feet, but this one currently does not. CP is also the only Class 1 railroad I've heard in Wisconsin where the crews acknowledge each detector report over the radio in the manner of the title.

  • Not the heavy metal band in reverse, but a Norfolk Southern conversion from DC traction motors to AC, which makes for a much more reliable locomotive. Here, Canadian Pacific's westbound train 381, hustles over the 137.3 detector outside of Richwood with a neat looking AC44C6M DC to AC conversion on point. CP 381 NS 4000,3636 Richwood, WI. • It will take precise timing for this train to keep moving yet not reach the stop signal before oncoming westbound 281's tail clears the control point. Prior to sometime in 2016, the switch from single to double main was about 2.5 miles further east, in Watertown proper and just west of the diamond with the UP Clyman Sub (and adjacent to the junction with the branch to Waterloo/Madison). This switch was removed at the request of the city following a derailment in late 2015. I'm not sure if the switch was actually determined to be the cause, or if it was just a "precaution."
