Norfolk Southern Freight at Wawaka, Indiana

Wawaka is between Ligonier and Waterloo, which I'm sure pins it down for you precisely. Anyway, my brother Doug and I were on our way to the Brick Ark Inn at Albion, a few miles south of here on September 18, 2020 when we spotted this long freight arriving from the west along the original New York Central mainline. I took a side road to await the train coming to the crossing. I think Norfolk Southern has the least colorful locomotives of all the railroads serving America. Noble County, Indiana During late evening light, an auto rack train NS 31M heads west on the NS Chicago Line west of Wawaka, Indiana. Remnants of the railroad pole line in defunct condition still remains up along this section of the railroad between Waterloo and Goshen, Indiana.

I'll always be a midwesterner at heart, and I love the orange glow of a chilly morning and the silhouettes of distant grain elevators, something that just doesn't happen in the southwest. The scene is on the Chicago Line at Wawaka, IN and a pair of NS manifest freights stare each other down on the long tangent track.

Heading west through the countryside of northern Indiana between Wawaka and Ligonier is Norfolk Southern symbol 65W, an empty crude oil train out of New Jersey to be turned over to the BNSF in Chicago. – That ex-CR SD60M #6801 leader along with the NS Conrail heritage unit seems to make a fitting set of power for a train running on this former Conrail mainline. – November 8th, 2017 ~~ A Jeff Hampton Photograph ©

Once a staple of Norfolk Southern's fleet, the Dash-9s are now quickly disappearing with a fate of rebuild. Here we see a pair of older "thoroughbred" paint D9Ws leading NS 205 through the Indiana segment of the Chicago Line.

Noble County, Indiana With stormy skies all around, the sun peeks out just long enough to give good lighting on the NS 25N as it cruise through the small town of Wawaka, Indiana. This will most likely be the last time I see and photograph the old NYC era railroad signals along the NS Chicago Line, since the last ones are slated to be cut over soon for the new PTC signals.
