  • There's a sign along US 41 around Pestigo, Wisconsin advertising a "Geographical Marker." Peshtigo is about where I start getting excited about Michigan when heading north or depressed about Wisconsin when heading south, so I've never stopped. I did this time and discovered a marker to something cool. This is where my path crosses the 45th latitude, the geometric halfway point when traveling along the surface of a rotating sphere between its equator and its north pole. It's very easy when standing in this spot to do mental math computing the angles between yourself and certain things.

  • This marker near Peshtigo, Wisconsin denotes the 45-degree latitude line, the halfway point between the equator and the north pole. The marker itself is a big chunk of copper attached to a larger chunk of granite. Considering the region's history of mining and what I know of the regional geology, both materials probably came from north of the line. As much as things like this entertain me, when you think about it there's really nothing that special about this spot. The 45th parallel runs around the entire planet, after all, forming a line that's about 17,600 miles long, at least as determined by the math I want to do. (The planet is a little flattened at the poles, and my calculation used the average diameter rather than the actual distance between this point and the planet's center. There are equations that will give you the distance much more exact, but it's Saturday morning, and I don't feel like tracking down the book that lists them.) A number of ipernity people in my contact list live near this line and probably cross it with some regularity. It likely inspired a monument here because US 41 had been a major north-south highway at one time, and the people of Peshtigo were hoping to drum up some reason for people to stop.
