  • CREATED BY: HEATH MATYSEK-SNYDER, RICHMOND, VA Heath Matysek-Snyder is an Assistant Professor of Craft/Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. His recent work investigates themes of place and identity through the simple act of stacking firewood. Like many others, Heath has a specific and real history with cutting, splitting, and stacking firewood. Growing up his family heated with wood and collecting it was a year-round family task. The komíny (Czech for “stacks”) he creates incorporate meaningful objects directly into firewood stacks. In Komíny-Tractor, Matysek-Snyder has taken an icon of Wisconsin, the tractor, parked it in a field and placed it into a stack of wood. LANDOWNER: SUSAN GREENWOOD See DTour Stop no. 7

  • Geographical coordinates of the taken: 43°35'49"N - 90°0'51"W
  • CREATED BY: JOHN MILLER, MADISON, WI IN PARTNERSHIP WITH RIVER ARTS INC. The Surveyor ties together the measuring of land, establishing legal boundaries, and the idea of property, all of which were necessary in establishing our economy and lifestyles. As you drive the DTour, think about how these ideas shape everything you pass by. John Miller works as a commercial and fine artist. His art focuses on natural spaces and phenomena with a particular interest in how what we see affects what we think we know about the world around us. LANDOWNER: RON & JUDY CHURCHILL Ron and Judy Churchill manage Churchill Farm, where they milk 60 cows on their 220-acre dairy farm.

  • Date of photography: 2012-10-20 19:09:37
  • Geographical coordinates of the taken: 43°34'29"N - 89°59'59"W
  • CREATED BY: BRENDA LEIGH BAKER, MADISON, WI Brenda Baker’s installation Crib re-conceptualizes the meaning and function of a corncrib. Instead of mundane storage bins, Crib becomes a beacon of color and light that draws passers-by into the landscape. Using existing structures and a combination of natural and man-made materials, the piece plays off the colors, topography, and scale of the landscape. Baker is a practicing artist in Madison, Wis., where she lives with a flock of small farm animals, two boys and her husband. She works as Director of Exhibits for Madison Children’s Museum, and is deeply involved in both sustainable design and urban agriculture in education movements. LANDOWNER: JERRY & JANE DOROW The Dorow Farm consists of cash cropping and cow-calf beef operations and has been in the family for two generations.
