  • From the series I worked on this Spring, photographing the spring ephemeral wildflowers in the back woods. These little plants come and go and are seen as little specks of purple and blue on the forest floor's leaf litter. purple perfection proving spring is here in the leaf litter Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • In the 51 years I have been prowling the forest behind our home I have never seen this fungi. Then a couple of weeks ago I came upon one six foot long log with at least five clumps of these beauties. If anyone knows what they are let me know please. yellow forest fungi something new in the neighborhood and daddy too Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • Birds are certainly amazing creatures with unbelievable behaviors. Their brains are so much more developed than what was previously believed. These red-bellied woodpeckers are all-season fixtures around our backyard and the woods beyond. This one seems to be leaning in to eavesdrop on a distant conversation. leaning in to hear or to see better not a bird brain Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • This image is from the series I am working on in the back forest(that belongs to the county). I am getting the camera down on the forest floor and recording the comings and goings of the spring ephemeral wildflowers. These mayapples(Podophyllum peltatum) are abundant and when the plant matures and produces two leaves, they produce a beautiful white flower below their umbrella like leaves. They grow in large colonies derived from a singe root. It looks like a prehistoric forest to me! I used my Lensbaby Velvet 56 to make this image. tiny green umbrellas growing up from the forest floor it's spring again Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • While staying at home to avoid Covid-19 I found a photography project in the back woods---the northern spring ephemeral wildflowers. I dusted off my Lensbaby Velvet 56 and my Pentax 100mm macro and walked every morning looking for wildflowers in bloom. The nice thing is they come in waves---first the bloodroot, then violets, then mayapples, etc. My goal has not been just to record the flower, but to make artistically pleasing images of them. This means taking a lot of pictures with various lens and then plenty of processing and cropping. I continue taking pictures of a particular species until I get what I want. This image of False Solomon's Seal is the one I wanted! false solomon's seal arching out over the forest floor a spring beauty Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • The humble wood anemone is a small, obscure plant, down on the forest floor, and one of the first of the spring ephemerals to emerge. To make this image I used my Lensbaby Velvet 56 lens and Pentax K1 camera. It is a manual lens and I shoot between f/5.6 and f1.8 hand held. Every morning I walk the same route with my dog through the woods behind the house and look for wildflower photo opportunities. I could use a regular macro lens, but I like the artistic results of the images, but it has taken some time for me to learn how to use this Lensbaby lens. wood anemone a hint of the devine on the forest floor Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • The forest floor behind our house is populated with bloodroot wildflowers. They have an attractive white blossom that closes at night and is one of the first of the spring bloomers around here. I find the leaf more interesting than the blossom. They stand up straight out of the ground with and amazing vascular system. The leaf shields the stem and flower. Notice what is left of the flower in front of the leaf. early spring emerger bloodroot leaf reaching for the sun while the flower withers Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • A week ago I first heard their caucus calls. They are back from the south and in great numbers. Once sandhills were a rare sighting---now every open field in our area has a least a pair. They are one of the exceptions to our loss of bird numbers. Welcome back sandhills, your calls sing of spring and warmer times. big noisy bird back from a southern diversion spring is here Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • This is from my "All About The Winneconne Drawbridge" project. Mike was one of eight bridge tenders who opened and closed the drawbridge. He is shown here at the controls, in the little building that sat on top of the bridge. The bridge is gone now, replaced by a new higher bridge without the ability to open and close . The bridge tenders jobs no longer exist. A lot of the charm of the old bridge and surrounding structures is also gone. Progress? To make this image we had to take a window off the building and I had to walk out on a small catwalk over the water. I used my "fish-eye lens" and made a HDR image because of the greater dynamic range. Notice the even exposure through the windows. drawbridge tender commanding the flow of traffic of people, boats, and autos Image and haiku by John Henry Gremmer

  • The cardinals have been singing from the tree tops in our neighborhood for the last three months and now they are nesting. One pair is nesting in the arbor next to our garage door. They fly off every time we pass by.
