  • After many spent quite a bit of time in storage or on lease to Metrolink, it's good to see some BNSF AC4400s getting loose again. It's still a widecab GE, but any variety is welcome given it seems like they have about 30,000 Gevos running around. Plus, Heritage 2>Heritage 3.

  • Loaded coal train 736 screams through the rock cut in Woodville, Alabama. This train was loaded in the Powder River Basin a few days prior, and has been making the trip to Plant Scherer in Georgia. The train is on the home stretch here. This time tomorrow it will be unloading at the massive plant in Georgia. Standing here only feet from the train is a rush. You are much closer than normal on the top of the rock cut, but you have no danger of being hit.

  • NS 736 enters the Woodville, Alabama rock cut at an even 50 miles an hour. This shot was well researched ahead of time. The train is running to a Georgia power plant just north of Macon Georgia. On the rock right below me a rattlesnake was seeking some shade on this 65 degree afternoon.

  • NS train 739, an empty coal train returning to the Powder River Basin from Georgia Power's Plant Scherer, rolls through Woodville, AL on May 12, 2018. The train is passing milepost 313 on Norfolk Southern's Memphis District East End. When I was living nearby and railfanning this area frequently in the 2007-2014 time frame, the Scherer trains always had solid BNSF consists; more recently, mixed BNSF/NS consists such as seen here seem to be more common.

  • After reviewing the 3 minute edit I did of this previous shot I decided this version looked more like what I saw. With that said this is NS train 736 flying through an impressive rock cut in Woodville, Alabama. The train is one of the several per day that run to the Georgia power plant scherer fom the powder river basin with BNSF power. The train is passing through the lower elevations of the Blue Ridge Mountains as evidenced here.

  • Woodville is the oldest town in Jackson County Alabama. Originally called Decatur County. Woodville was settled about 1815 by Henry Derrick. It was named for early residents Richard and Annie Wood. Woodville became the seat of Decatur County, Alabama in December 1821, but was attached to Jackson County when Decatur County was abolished the following year. The surrounding area was the site of considerable guerrilla warfare during the American Civil War. Woodville also has a railroad. The Norfolk Southern mainline runs through the little town. I wondered what happened to the depot that was there. I found the website for Woodville's library and found a picture of the station. I email them and the lady said informed me that the depot still exists. It's been moved away from the tracks to the main road. It sits beside the fire station. It served as a restaurant, but that has closed. By looking at the building now it looks like the left side was the original part and the rest was added when it was moved. Just looking at the building you would never guess it was a depot. There are signs that say "The Depot." Here's the earlier photo bellsouthpwp2.net/p/u/publicw/pics/1925upgrade.JPG
