  • The conductor has just lined the switch for movement onto the Altoona Sub main (which curves sharply off to the right), momentarily the train will creep off the rickety jointed rail of the Winona Sub and put the hammer down for Adams.

  • Union Pacific's Winona-Adams and Adams-Winona wayfreights (LTA-42 and LTA-41, respectively) are almost unique among freight trains in Wisconsin for still using a caboose on a daily basis. This is due to a shove move they have to make to access UP's isolated yard in Winona, and the car is not staffed while the train is on the road. This is ex-MoPac transfer caboose No. 13791.

  • The 71 slows to stop and line the switch to access the siding and yard for Hi-Crush at Wyeville. There they'll pick up 18 loads, then shove these four empties down the Camp Douglas spur to the Smart Sand loading site.

  • Someone in the crew of MAGBU said this over the radio as they swung around the curve through Wyeville, so I laughed and gave them a big wave. The train is curving off the old CStPM&O (Omaha Road) alignment and onto the "Adams Cut-off" (both presently part of the Altoona Subdivision). The cut-off was built in the early 1900s to allow the C&NW to provide more competitive passenger service between Chicago and the Twin Cities. This gradually siphoned traffic away from the routing via Madison and Elroy, until the section of combined C&NW and ex-Omaha Road from Reedsburg to Camp Douglas was abandoned in the late 1980s. The diamond here would likely have been removed at the same time.

  • While "heritage" reporting marks from their many merger acquisitions are very common on UP rolling stock, most of the cars have been repainted and given their ubiquitous shield logo, or else the marks get applied to new cars that never actually belonged to the fallen flag road. Finding an untouched one like this is always a treat. According to the text on the side it was built in May, 1976.

  • These caught my eye, since I'd long associated the WSOX reporting mark with the WSOR MoW department (probably because their Jordan spreader No. 9 carries that mark).
